Gil DePaula
José Dirceu is one of the most controversial figures in Brazilian politics. His trajectory blends ideology, disguises, corruption, and scandals, making him a symbol of hypocrisy and opportunism in the national landscape.
In the 1960s, Dirceu was a young communist militant engaged in armed struggle against the military dictatorship. After being arrested and exiled, he was sent to Cuba, where he received guerrilla training, learning tactics of subversion and infiltration. Upon clandestinely returning to Brazil, he adopted a false identity and lived for years as an ordinary citizen, lying even to his own wife, who was unaware of his true identity.
With democratization, Dirceu traded clandestinity for institutional power. He became one of the main architects of the Workers’ Party (PT) and was instrumental in Lula’s election in 2002. He assumed the role of Chief of Staff and from there, orchestrated a parallel government based on corruption and influence peddling. His involvement in the Mensalão scandal, a scheme to buy votes in Congress, led to his impeachment and conviction.
Even after serving his sentence, Dirceu did not abandon his old practices. During Operation Car Wash (Lava Jato), his name resurfaced in bribery and money laundering schemes involving Petrobras. He was sentenced to over 30 years in prison, with overwhelming evidence proving he used his influence to benefit companies and finance a political project rooted in systemic corruption.
José Dirceu’s trajectory is that of a man who, under the pretense of fighting for an ideal, built an empire of fraud, deceived allies, and cemented a legacy marked by opportunism and contempt for the law. His story reflects not only the path of a dishonest politician but also serves as a warning about the dangers of allowing men like him to reach power.

Lands of the Lost Men – Gil DePaula (2017)
Lands of Lost Men, by Gil DePaula, is a historical fiction that explores the founding of Brasilia and the impact of the construction of the new capital on the lives of ordinary Brazilians. The narrative is set between 1939 and 1960 and follows the drama of Maria Odete, a strong and resilient woman, who recalls her past of challenges and disappointments while facing the pains of childbirth. Her story is intertwined with that of two rival and proud farmers, both called Antônio, who fight for power amid a web of revenge, betrayal and personal tragedies.
The book highlights the scenery of the Brazilian countryside and the saga of the workers who built Brasilia with sweat and sacrifice. Gil DePaula uses his detailed style to paint a portrait of the complex human and social interactions of the time, where passions and rivalries shape the destiny of his characters and reflect the transformations of a nation. The work combines realism with an intensely emotionally charged narrative, capturing both the grandeur of the capital’s construction and the small personal tragedies that marked its foundation.
