Former president Jair Bolsonaro is wearing an electronic ankle monitor. He is prohibited from speaking with his own children. He cannot communicate with embassies or use social media. His freedom of expression has been suspended. His presence in public life is being forcibly erased — all of this without a single judicial conviction. What is unfolding in Brazil is far more than an investigation: it is an explicit attempt at humiliation, moral destruction, and political exclusion.

Alexandre de Moraes and the Supreme Federal Court have become central players in a scenario worthy of authoritarian regimes, where the judiciary acts as a political agent. The goal is not simply to enforce the law — it is to publicly break Bolsonaro, turn him into an example, silence his supporters, and, above all, demoralize the opposition.

The measures imposed on Bolsonaro — ankle monitor, curfew, digital censorship, and family restrictions — are not justified by any concrete evidence of an escape attempt, as alleged. He voluntarily returned to Brazil in 2023 and has cooperated with the investigations.

These restrictions have a clear purpose: to impose maximum humiliation. They are actions aimed at dehumanizing him in the eyes of the public, subjecting him to disgrace, and completely isolating him from his support base. This is not an effort to serve justice, but rather to destroy — and most notably, to seek revenge for political stances adopted during his administration, including his alignment with Donald Trump to the detriment of certain global and domestic interests.

Alexandre de Moraes is no longer merely a judge. He has become prosecutor, judge, and enforcer of preemptive sentences. He interferes with social media, orders arrests, censors opinions, and unilaterally decides what can or cannot be said in the country. His protagonism in political decisions has far exceeded all constitutional boundaries.

Moraes’s actions against Bolsonaro are merely the most symbolic example of a broader movement: the replacement of democracy by a robed technocracy, in which justices behave like emperors and citizens become subjects without a voice.

Justice should be impartial. But what we are witnessing is the blatant instrumentalization of the law for political purposes. This is not about uncovering the truth — it is about publicly punishing an inconvenient opponent.

The censorship of Bolsonaro on social media, the ban on his contact with embassies and even with his own children, shows that the intent goes far beyond legal containment. It is a process of symbolic and political extermination.

Is Brazil already living under a state of exception?

All the ingredients are on the table:

Institutionalized censorship;

Criminalization of the opposition;

Judicialization of political discourse;

Suppression of fundamental rights.

It is no longer possible to confidently claim that we live in a full democracy. Brazil is moving toward — or perhaps has already arrived at — a state of exception, where laws are used to destroy political enemies rather than to guarantee justice.

The press remains silent or applauds. Congress watches passively. And the people are left confused and on the sidelines, as they witness a former president being publicly disfigured under the guise of legality.

This is not about shielding Bolsonaro from investigations. It is about denouncing the use of the judiciary as a weapon of institutional warfare.

Today, Bolsonaro is the target. But tomorrow it could be any citizen who dares to criticize the system, express themselves online, or simply vote “incorrectly.” The ankle monitor is not just an electronic device — it is the symbol of a new order: a country where robed power imprisons ideas and persecutes leadership.
